Sapphire is so beloved it is the gem for two marriage anniversaries, the 5th & 45th. It's so durable that synthetic versions are used in a wide range of industrial applications from supermarket scanners, to cell phone screens, and even space crafts. Sapphires often contain delicate intersecting needles of the mineral rutile that's called silk giving the stones a soft subtle glow or when aligned just the right way can create a "star" asterism, when cut in a cabochon.
