When Paraiba Tourmaline was fist discovered in Brazil in the 1980's, the unusally intense "neon" or "electric" blues and greens set it apart from any other Tourmalin previously known. It's a natural variety of Elbaite Tourmaline and the gems get their intense coloration from trace elements of copper. The rarity of this stone is underscored by the fact that for every carat of cut and polished Paraiba Tourmaline produced annually over 10,000 carats of cut and polished Diamonds are fashioned.
